Pounding the pavement solo or walking the beaten (and not so beaten) bush track is my solace. Alone time to escape. The opportunity to expend negative energies. A chance to realign my internal equilibrium. It’s a necessary I’ve come to rely on.
After one of the toughest year’s mentally, emotionally and physically, there was no way I was going to let the future beat me. So late in 2015 after a relationship break up, health dramas and months spent questioning my existence – I started running.
While I wasn’t overweight, I was certainly not fit. Growing up, I was an active kid and in 2015 I walked the Overland Track and the Kokoda Track but when I returned from PNG in September of that year with a busted knee, it was time to make a change.
I’ve always had a keen interest in the outdoors, with a specific love of hiking and camping adventures. Slowly I’ve been ticking off great walks from my long list, and as I continue to do this I have come to realise it is important to ensure my body is better equipped to handle the conditions.
Firstly, I adjusted my eating habits. While I still enjoy great meals and drinks every now and then, I cut down on my intake and adjusted my portion sizes. Coupled with a solid swim, bike ride or run every other day, I went from 64kg to 53kg. That’s a size 10/12 down to 6/8.
I also stepped out of my comfort zone and pushed myself to take part in a number of mass participation events. It all started with the The Sydney Morning Herald Sun Run on Saturday, February 6 when I ran 10km – setting a new personal best. I then decided to take up triathlons – starting small with enticer distances, before stepping it up to compete in both sprint and Olympic lengths. It’s all about setting goals, taking it step-by-step and slowly you will see positive results and successes.
Most importantly, I started to feel great! It’s not just about looking good, but how much a lifestyle change can impact every part of your life. Mentally, emotionally and physically I became a new and improved me. Maybe my posts and updates will inspire you to be the positive shift you want to see in your life.
For too long, I put others before myself. This is not a flaw and something to eradicate from what you offer out to the world, but rather about finding a balance. It’s not selfish to love yourself. You must take care of yourself and make happiness a priority. It is necessary.
Good luck on your own journey and I hope you enjoy the ride (swim, hike, run or walk) with me as I continue to embark along my path x
